Brewer’s Dictionary of Phrase and Fable seats the Vampire (after Dom Calmet) as a dead man who returns and sucks the blood of persons asleep, who then become vampires in turn — also the extortioner phrase. A named Vampire in that blood-taking speech, not a werewolf, and not a ghoul.
