Animal bride

Myth & story

The tale-type of a wife in animal skin or shape who flees if the secret breaks. Not swan-maiden-cloak as gear alone, and not selkie-skin alone.

Northwest Coast tradition

  • Animal bride appears in Northwest Coast tradition.

Swanton’s Tlingit Myths and Texts records marriages to animal wives among Tlingit narrative types — animal-bride speech in that collection. A named Northwest Coast tale-type, not Ovid’s metamorphoses and not a pan-Indigenous dump.
