Babylon

Places

The great Mesopotamian city of walls, gates, and later omen speech. Not Babel as the tongue-tower alone, and not a nation dump.

Mesopotamian tradition

  • Babylon appears in Mesopotamian tradition.

Enuma Elish centers Babylon as Marduk’s city where the gods’ shrine is raised after the cosmogonic victory. A named Babylon seat in that creation epic, not the Genesis Babel tower and not a nation-state dump.

from Enuma Elish, standard version often dated to the late 2nd millennium BCE
