A Yoruba òrìṣà of the crossroads, messages, and the opening of Ifá. Not a generic trickster imported from elsewhere.

Eshu belongs to Yoruba Ifá.
Bascom’s account of Ifá places Eshu at the opening of the rite: messages do not pass without him.

Eshu tests, misdirects, and opens roads. Calling him “the Yoruba trickster” is a comparative label; the òrìṣà is not Hermes in another hat.
