Ghusl

Beliefs & concepts

Full-body ritual washing that restores Islamic purity after major impurity. Not wudu as the minor wash alone, and not baptism as Christian initiation.

Islam

  • Ghusl is used in Islam.

The Qur’an (4:43; 5:6) commands full washing when in a major impurity state (junub) before prayer. Islamic major-wash use in that revelation, not wudu as the ordinary limbs-wash already walked and not tayammum as the earth substitute alone.
