Kantele

Objects · Myth & story

The named zither of Finnish epic, associated with Väinämöinen’s song. Not Uaithne, and not a later folk-souvenir as the whole job.

European folklore

  • Kantele appears in European folklore.

Grove’s Dictionary seats the kantele among Baltic / Finnish zither chordophones of northern European folk practice. A named kantele in that music-dictionary folk frame, not a psaltery alone and not a harp flatten.
