Misogi

Rituals

A named Japanese purification by cold water, waterfall, or sea immersion. Not baptism as Christian washing, and not oharai as shrine purification by wand or paper.

Shinto

  • Misogi is used in Shinto.

The Kojiki has Izanagi wash and purify after Yomi’s pollution before the noble children are born from that cleansing — the narrative charter for misogi as water purification practice. Named rite of use in that tradition speech, not baptism and not oharai as wand-and-paper shrine cleansing.
