Oni

Beings · Myth & story

A horned ogre of Japanese story, often a punisher or epidemic-being. Not a European troll and not every demon of later games.

Buddhist traditions

  • Oni is historically related to Hell.

Chamberlain seats oni among Japanese demon figures of folklore and Buddhist hell imagery — demon speech, not a tengu mountain goblin alone.
