Oracle bone

Objects · Rituals · Traditions

Cattle bone or shell cracked for Shang divination and later study. Not a synonym for every lot or omen tool.

Chinese tradition

  • Oracle bone is historically related to Yijing.

Wilhelm’s Yijing materials place Shang bone-and-shell oracle consultation as a historical neighbor of the Changes’ stalk method. A historical-method link, not identity of oracle-bone with the received Yijing and not turtle alone as the same edge.
