Sheng

A named mouth-organ of Chinese court and later ensemble practice. Not a shakuhachi, not a generic staff, and not every later free-reed tourist pipe.

Chinese tradition

  • Sheng is historically related to Bamboo.

Bushell’s music notes seat the sheng as the Chinese mouth organ of bamboo pipes — bamboo-pipe speech, not a Western organ dump.
