Soapstone

Objects · Colors & materials

A named talc-rich stone of carving, hearths, and later Inuit and Scandinavian vessels. Not jade, and not generic stone.

Also known as Steatite

Roman religion

  • Soapstone appears in Roman religion.

Pliny’s Natural History seats steatite among soft talc-rich stones carved for vessels and craft. A named soapstone/steatite seat in that encyclopedia, not talc as a modern mineral-class name refused here and not jade as a false-identity dump.

from Pliny the Elder · Natural History, c. 77 CE
