Canopic jar

Objects · Rituals · Traditions

A named viscera-jar of Egyptian embalming, later with guardian lids. Not a generic cup, and not Pandora’s box.

Egyptian religion

  • Canopic jar appears in Egyptian religion.

The Book of the Dead and Egyptian funerary practice seat canopic jars among the vessels that hold the viscera of the dead. A named canopic jar in that corpus, not a generic jar dump and not ushabti as the servant figure already walked.
