Cocytus

Places

The river of wailing in Greek underworld geography. Not Styx as the oath-river, and not Lethe as the forgetfulness stream.

Also known as Kokytos

Hellenic religion

  • Cocytus appears in Hellenic religion.

Ovid’s Metamorphoses underworld speech names Cocytus among the lamenting rivers of the dead. A named Cocytus in that poem, not Acheron as the same river and not every wailing dump.

from Ovid · Metamorphoses, 8 CE
