Hypocephalus

Objects · Rituals · Traditions

A named inscribed disk placed under a mummy’s head in later Egyptian funerary sets. Not a cartouche, not a shen-ring, and not a heart-scarab.

Egyptian religion

  • Hypocephalus appears in Egyptian religion.

The Book of the Dead neighborhood seats the hypocephalus among disk amulets placed under the head of the dead. A named hypocephalus in that funerary corpus, not heart-scarab as the chest amulet already walked and not a modern coin dump.
