A narrow land bridge between larger lands. Not peninsula as a one-sided nearly-island, and not strait as the water passage beside it.

Hellenic religion

  • Isthmus appears in Hellenic religion.

Pausanias walks the Corinthian Isthmus among Poseidon’s sanctuary, games speech, and land-bridge itinerary. A named isthmus in that periegesis, not every neck-of-land dump and not Corinth as a missing city entity.

  • Isthmus is sacred to Poseidon.

Pausanias seats the Isthmus sanctuary and Isthmian rites as Poseidon’s. A place→god dedication in that periegesis, not every harbor Poseidon shrine and not the sea lemma alone.
