Phlegethon

Places

The river of fire in Greek underworld geography. Not ordinary fire, and not Muspelheim as the Norse fire-world.

Also known as Pyriphlegethon

Hellenic religion

  • Phlegethon appears in Hellenic religion.

Ovid’s Metamorphoses underworld speech names Phlegethon among the fiery rivers of the dead. A named Phlegethon in that poem, not Acheron as the same river and not every fire dump.

from Ovid · Metamorphoses, 8 CE
