Skidbladnir

Objects · Myth & story · Traditions

A named folding-ship of Norse story, large enough for gods and small enough to pocket. Not a generic boat, and not Naglfar the nail-ship under another name.

Also known as Skíðblaðnir

Norse tradition

  • Skidbladnir appears in Norse tradition.

Snorri’s Gylfaginning describes Skíðblaðnir as the ship that can be folded like a cloth. A named Norse ship of that cosmology, not Naglfar the nail-ship.

  • Skidbladnir is sacred to Freyr.

Snorri’s Gylfaginning seats Skíðblaðnir among the folding ship the dwarfs make for Freyr, always with a fair wind. A named ship dedicated to that Vanir god, not naglfar as the nail-ship of ruin and not a bare boat dump.
