Theft of fire

Myth & story

The tale-type of a culture-bringer stealing fire for humans. Not prometheus-chains as a binding object alone, and not every lightning bolt.

Hellenic religion

  • Theft of fire appears in Hellenic religion.

Hesiod’s Theogony tells Prometheus stealing fire for humans and the punishment that follows. A named fire-theft episode in that cosmogony, not prometheus-chains as the binding object alone and not culture-hero as a motif dump.
