A moon more than half lit but not yet full — waxing or waning gibous in learned speech. Not full moon, and not crescent.

    Pliny’s Natural History notes the swollen mid-phase of the moon among phase speech. A named gibbous shape in that encyclopedia, not full-moon and not crescent.
