Naphtha

Elements

A light flammable petroleum fraction of older craft and war talk. Not oil as a general liquid, and not bitumen already published.

  • Naphtha is used in Medicine.

Pliny’s Natural History treats naphtha among burning bituminous liquids noted in remedy and marvel speech. A Roman-era pharmacological/natural-history use of light bitumen oil, not bitumen as the heavier pitch-earth already filed and not petroleum as a modern class.

from Pliny the Elder · Natural History, c. 77 CE
